JOE PALMUCCI'S TEACHING PORTFOLIO

About the Course

Hello!

My name is Joe Palmucci and I am entering my tenth year of teaching, 8 at the the middle school level and 1 at the high school so far. When I am not teaching video game design, I am teaching either Manufacturing or Video Production. The thing about game design the interests me the most is the coding. It is very precise and one little mistake can cause you a lot of grief.

The course I took is offered through the website Zulama.com, which is Powered by Carnegie Learning. I was offered the opportunity to take the course when our School decided to implement "Video Game Design" as a course offering this past school year. My coworkers and I learned that Youtube alone wasn't enough and we needed some help! I am invested in designing game because I know it is an exciting way to get students engaged in Computer Science! Getting students invested in a project and taking ownership can empower them to reach places they never knew they could.

Through the course, we covered aspects of Video Game Design that I never thought of.  The course has 8 Modules. The course begins with the question "What is a Game?" and by the end you are creating your own game from scratch!

The course was rigorous, but I believe all the hard work has paid off and I am very proud of the game I created. The thing I enjoy most about designing games is the challenge. It is like learning a new language and putting a puzzle together at the same time. Though there are time where I want to give up, the rush I get from solving a problem is like nothing else!
